Requirements by country of origin — Quick guide

Chile applies different requirements depending on the rabies status of the country of origin, but the process is the shortest of all profiles on this site. From Peru the process can be completed in 10 days if the animal already has valid vaccines. Identify your case before continuing.

CASE 1 — From rabies-free countries recognised by SAG
Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and other countries declared rabies-free by WOAH. Chile still requires an official health certificate and antiparasitic treatments for all origins, including rabies-free ones. However, specific conditions may vary. Verify directly at: https://www.sag.gob.cl/ambitos-de-accion/ingreso-de-perros-gatos-y-hurones-mascotas
CASE 2 — From countries with presence of rabies (includes Peru and most of Latin America)
Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico and other Latin American countries with presence of rabies. They require ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccine with at least 21 days since application, valid multiple vaccines, internal and external antiparasitic treatment applied within the 30 days prior to entry, official health certificate with SENASA endorsement, and digital sworn declaration completed at https://ingresoachile.cl before boarding. No RNATT. No months of waiting. Process from Peru: 10 days if vaccines are already valid, 30 days from scratch.
The rest of this profile fully develops Case 2.
NOTE ON CHILE AS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:
Chile is classified as rabies-free by APQA (South Korea), APHA (United Kingdom) and the EU. If your pet is coming from Chile to another destination, check that destination's profile to verify the specific conditions that apply for Chile.

Global classification of the destination

Regulatory model

Model C: no general quarantine, with retention authority. Chile does not require routine quarantine. Pets enter directly after document and physical inspection at the entry point, provided they meet current health requirements. In case of non-compliance, SAG retains the animal at the airport or border crossing until the requirement is met or until re-export (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023).

Rabies status of the destination country

Canine rabies-free. Chile declared itself free of canine rabies in 1991. It maintains active surveillance in bats.
Source: WOAH — https://www.woah.org/en/disease/rabies/

Country-of-origin classification system

Yes. SAG classifies countries of origin according to their rabies status recognised by WOAH and SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023. Peru is a country with presence of rabies. In Latin America this category is shared by: Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Mexico. There is currently no Latin American country classified as rabies-free under SAG's specific pet direct-import standards that would allow entry without a rabies vaccine.

Requirements for dogs

Microchip

— Required standard: ISO 11784/11785, 15 digits (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023).
— Must it be implanted before the vaccine? Yes. Identification is mandatory and must appear on all certificates with traceability to each vaccine and treatment recorded.
— If the chip was implanted after: SAG may reject the validity of previous vaccines due to lack of traceability. The vaccine must be repeated and associated with the chip number.

Rabies vaccine

— Mandatory: Yes.
— Minimum age for vaccination: 90 days (3 months) (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023).
— Minimum post-vaccination period: at least 21 days before entry for first vaccinations (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023). This is the only waiting period that applies for Chile from Peru.
— Recognised validity: 1 or 3 years according to manufacturer's leaflet, provided it is valid at the time of entry.
— Accepted vaccine types: vaccines approved by the official authority of the country of origin.
— If expired: it is considered first vaccination. The 21-day minimum wait is restarted.

Rabies antibody titer test (RNATT)

Not required. Chile does not require rabies antibody titer testing for pet entry from any country of origin, including Peru (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023). This is one of the elements that makes Chile the most accessible destination from Peru in this entire collection of profiles.

✓ No RNATT required. Chile does not require rabies antibody titer test from any country of origin. Process from Peru: 10 days with valid vaccines, 30 days from scratch.

Other vaccines required by Chile regulations

Chile requires valid multiple vaccines in addition to rabies. For dogs: Distemper, Parvovirus, Infectious canine hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Parainfluenza (valid six-in-one or eight-in-one vaccine) (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023). This requirement is grounds for retention if not met: Chile requires these vaccines as an entry condition, not only as an export requirement of the country of origin.

SENASA — Peru's official veterinary authority — also requires this same complete and valid vaccination scheme to issue the International Export Health Certificate. Verify directly at https://www.gob.pe/senasa before starting the process from Peru.

Antiparasitic treatments

Mandatory, both internal and external (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023). Chile is one of the strictest destinations in the world for antiparasitic control due to national agricultural biosecurity.

— Internal treatment: broad-spectrum product effective against Echinococcus granulosus and other cestodes. The SAG inspector explicitly verifies Echinococcus coverage. If the product does not cover Echinococcus, the certificate may be rejected.

⚠ SAG inspectors explicitly verify coverage against Echinococcus granulosus. A product that does not cover Echinococcus may be rejected even if it is a common antiparasitic.

— External treatment: product effective against fleas and ticks.
— Mandatory time window: applied within the 30 days prior to entry to Chile. For greater operational safety, apply between 5 and 10 days before travel.
— Who applies and documents: licensed veterinarian in the country of origin. Must be recorded on the Official Health Certificate with product name, dose and exact date of application.

Health certificate

— Official name: Official Export Health Certificate.
— Who can issue it: official health authority of the country of origin. In Peru: SENASA (https://www.gob.pe/senasa). In Colombia: ICA. In Ecuador: AGROCALIDAD.
— Validity time window: 10 days from official issue until entry to Chile.
— Does it require endorsement? Yes, by the national health authority of the country of origin. In Peru: SENASA (https://www.gob.pe/senasa).
— SAG reference URL: https://www.sag.gob.cl/ambitos-de-accion/ingreso-de-perros-gatos-y-hurones-mascotas

Official entry document

— Exact name: Official Health Certificate from the country of origin that meets SAG requirements.
— Who issues it: SENASA in Peru based on the requirements of SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023.
— Time window: 10 days from issue.
— Reference URL: https://www.sag.gob.cl/ambitos-de-accion/ingreso-de-perros-gatos-y-hurones-mascotas

Mandatory digital forms

Yes. Chile requires the Entry Declaration completed in SAG's digital system before boarding. This declaration generates a QR code that must be presented at border control. Without this code, SAG no longer accepts paper declarations.
Mandatory URL: https://ingresoachile.cl

⚠ Must be completed before boarding. SAG does not accept paper declarations. Without QR code: delays and fines at border control.

Quarantine

— Mandatory: No, as a routine.
— Conditional: Yes. It is triggered by non-compliance with documentary requirements, antiparasitic treatment outside the window, expired vaccines or unreadable microchip.
— SAG retains the animal at the entry point until the requirement is met or until re-export to the country of origin.

Breed restrictions

There are no breeds prohibited from entering Chile. Once in the country, Law N° 21.020 on Responsible Pet and Companion Animal Ownership applies, which establishes handling conditions for certain breeds considered potentially dangerous. Consult directly with Chile's Ministry of the Interior for post-entry conditions.

Minimum age for entry

No strict minimum identified in SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023, but the animal must meet the minimum vaccination age (90 days) plus the 21-day post-first-vaccination wait. In practice: approximate minimum of 111 days.

Transport mode

Chile allows cabin baggage (PETC), hold (AVIH) and Manifest Cargo. It does not impose a mandatory mode (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023). Verify with the airline the conditions for the specific route from Peru.

Situation of Peru and Latin America

Peru is a country with presence of rabies according to SAG. Rabies vaccine is mandatory. No RNATT. Certification is the responsibility of SENASA (https://www.gob.pe/senasa). This classification is shared by: Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Mexico. Export certification in each case is the responsibility of ICA in Colombia, AGROCALIDAD in Ecuador, MAPA Brasil SDA in Brazil, SENASICA in Mexico, SENASAG in Bolivia, SENACSA in Paraguay, MGAP-DGSG in Uruguay and INSAI in Venezuela.

Situation of rabies-free countries

Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom. Chile still requires an official health certificate and antiparasitic treatments even for these countries. The rabies vaccine may have specific conditions for rabies-free countries. Verify directly with SAG before starting the process from any of these countries.

Transit through third countries

If a pet transits through a country with inferior health status without leaving the airport's international area, it does not lose its original health status. Verify specific transit conditions directly with SAG.

What sets Chile apart from all other destinations in this collection

Chile is the only destination in this collection that does not require RNATT from any country of origin. There is no 90-day wait, no 180-day wait, no accredited laboratories to search for. The complete process from Peru with already valid vaccines can be completed in 10 days. What Chile does require rigorously is antiparasitic treatment with explicit Echinococcus coverage and the digital sworn declaration, two requirements that owners frequently underestimate.

Common mistakes

ERROR 1: Antiparasitic treatment outside the 30-day window

What happens: the owner applies deworming more than 30 days before reaching the border, thinking that any recent date is valid.
Regulatory consequence: certificate rejection at the SAG entry point. The animal must be treated at the airport or border crossing at additional cost to the owner (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023).
How to prevent it: apply treatments between 5 and 10 days before travel to ensure validity and safety margin.

ERROR 2: Antiparasitic product without Echinococcus coverage

What happens: the veterinarian applies a common antiparasitic that does not have specific coverage against Echinococcus granulosus. The SAG inspector explicitly verifies this point.
Regulatory consequence: rejection of the treatment as valid; the animal must be treated at the entry point (SAG).
How to prevent it: verify with the veterinarian that the selected product covers Echinococcus and that this is documented in the certificate with the commercial name of the product.

ERROR 3: Absence of microchip number on the certificate

What happens: the official certificate from SENASA or another Latin American authority does not include the 15-digit ISO microchip code, or the transcribed number has an incorrect digit.
Regulatory consequence: retention of the animal at Santiago airport (SCL) or at the border crossing until documentation is corrected (SAG).
How to prevent it: verify that the official veterinarian transcribes the chip number exactly before SENASA endorses the certificate.

ERROR 4: Not completing the digital sworn declaration before boarding

What happens: the owner arrives at SAG control without the QR code generated by the https://ingresoachile.cl system, thinking it can be done at the airport or that a written paper is equivalent.
Regulatory consequence: severe delays at border control and possible customs fines. SAG no longer accepts paper declarations (SAG).
How to prevent it: complete the form at https://ingresoachile.cl before boarding in Lima and save the generated QR code on your phone.

ERROR 5: Rabies vaccine applied less than 21 days ago

What happens: the owner vaccinates the animal days before the flight thinking it is already protected and can travel immediately.
Regulatory consequence: prohibition of the animal's entry into Chilean territory (SAG Resolution N° 6.052/2023).
How to prevent it: plan the vaccine at least one month before the flight to have margin over the mandatory 21-day minimum.

ERROR 6: Presenting private health certificate without SENASA endorsement

What happens: the document signed only by the private veterinarian without the official SENASA stamp is presented at SAG control.
Regulatory consequence: immediate rejection. Only the certificate issued or endorsed by the official health authority of the government of the country of origin is valid (SAG).
How to prevent it: obtain the official endorsement at SENASA (https://www.gob.pe/senasa) before travel. The private certificate without endorsement has no value before SAG.

Within this entire collection of profiles, Chile is the destination that works best when the owner arrives prepared and the one that most penalises improvisation on seemingly minor details. RNATT does not exist, months of waiting do not exist, and the process can be completed in ten days. But there are two points where SAG does not budge: the antiparasitic with explicit Echinococcus coverage and the digital sworn declaration. The inspector at Chacalluta or SCL does not accept a product that does not cover Echinococcus even if the commercial name is well known, and does not accept handwritten papers instead of the QR code. Those two points are what turn a smooth ten-minute entry into a three-hour retention. For owners from northern Peru travelling by land, Chacalluta has an additional particularity: SAG inspector availability hours do not always match general crossing hours, and arriving outside that window with a pet means waiting until the next inspection shift.

IS YOUR PET TRAVELLING TO CHILE?

No RNATT and with a 10-day process, Chile is the most agile destination in this collection. What cannot fail: the antiparasitic with Echinococcus coverage and the QR code of the sworn declaration before boarding.
At Zoovet Travel we manage the SENASA certificate and guide you step by step so that SAG control at Chacalluta or Santiago is the last formality, not the first.
